Education
The Khalifas attracted to their courts men of science and letters, poets, physicians and philosophers whom they all supported. Differences of creed were no barrier. Learning progressed and developed. Primarily, the Mosques served as the basic educational institution of the Community. However, as the demand for learning grew, the Madrassah [college] began to appear. Also, with the creation of colleges emerged the Jamia [university]. The oldest university in the world is the Al Azhar, then the University of Fez in Morocco, known as the Qarawiyyin.
