Knowledge
Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), unlike most religious heads urged the
pursuit of all knowledge. The child's education began as soon as one spoke. At
the age of six, all children entered elementary school. Free education was
provided. Elementary education shaped and formed character whilst secondary
school transmitted knowledge. Pupils were encouraged to travel and meet famous
teachers to acquire morality and education. A scholarly lecture could be heard
in a Mosque at every hour of the day. Knowledge was not divided into two
watertight compartments i.e. religious and secular. There was an emphasis on the
pursuit of all knowledge.
